The Allan Slaight Radio Institute announces a major renewal and expansion of Ryerson University’s RTA School of Media in the Faculty of Communication & Design, designed by Quadrangle Architects. Named for broadcasting pioneer Allan Slaight, the new institute was created through a $3 million gift from The Slaight Family Foundation to support the next generation of radio innovators and entrepreneurs. The institute solidifies the faculty’s position as the leader in creative innovation in Canada.

“The vision for this institute was to give students a state-of-the-art broadcast facility where they could take learning and practice to the next level. A place for them to collaborate, ideate and push the boundaries of what radio is today,” states Charles Falzon, Dean of Ryerson’s Faculty of Communication & Design. “Working with Quadrangle was a wonderful experience because they understood the goal we wanted to achieve and kept it in mind from the outset right through to completion. Their invaluable expertise in this area really made it easy for us to focus on what the possibilities of this creative space could be, instead of where things should go.”

Located in the Rogers Communication Centre, the institute encompasses five production control suites, including the SpiritLive student internet-radio production control suite and one larger multi-purpose studio and control room, home of the Global Campus Network initiative. These encircle a central commons space for formal and informal use including performances and events. Activating the interior “street” on the main floor of the RCC’s atrium, Quadrangle envisioned the institute as a unique “storefront”, providing prominent signage, a distinctive sound wave frit and generous openings that encourage passers-by to take interest in the creative innovation happening inside the institute.

Gary Slaight, president, The Slaight Family Foundation, said, “The Allan Slaight Radio Institute now provides students with a passion for radio the opportunity to learn in a modern, updated facility where they can collaborate to launch compelling productions and future careers. Our family is very pleased to help make this happen for students.”

To support both learning and experimentation, Quadrangle designed the institute for maximum flexibility and openness in all aspects, from its spatial organization to its technological integration. Audio production is no longer hidden behind solid walls and dark hallways. The institute incorporates the latest developments in broadcast radio, including fully routable digital technology and interconnected cameras for “visual radio”. Immediately adjacent to the

RCC’s student-run TV studios, the institute also encourages synergies with the TV production department. To fully realize this vision,  Opportunities to maximize interconnectivity between studios, media, departments and even other universities around the world, encouraging student collaboration, cross-pollination and creativity.
