HBO Canada, a multiplex channel of Corus Entertainment’s Movie Central (Western Canada) and Astral’s The Movie Network (Eastern Canada) turns the camera on Canadian comedian Shaun Majumder in Shaun Majumder, Every Word Is Absolutely True, premiering Monday, April 30 at 7:30 p.m. ET/MT on HBO Canada.
Part comedy road-trip and part in-depth look at one of Canada’s most beloved comedic talents, this feature-length documentary follows the star of The Firm and This Hour Has 22 Minutes as he embarks on his first-ever cross-Canada stand-up tour, taking him from St. John’s, Newfoundland, to Victoria, B.C.
Produced in association with Movie Central and The Movie Network, Shaun Majumder, Every Word Is Absolutely True offers inside access to the comedian as he brings laughs to cities across the country while simultaneously building awareness and raising funds for his passion project, the building of an eco-friendly lodge in his hometown of Burlington, Newfoundland. With unprecedented access to Majumder’s private life, director Peter Esteves interweaves moments from his performances in front of sold-out crowds to behind-the scenes candid interviews, publicity stops and archival footage. The resulting portrait is both funny and deeply revealing, including a look at Majumder’s humble childhood, his close relationship with his mother and the racism he has faced in his career and personal life.
The film also offers insights into the career of this three-time Gemini Award winner, from his beginnings at Toronto’s Yuk Yuk’s comedy club to becoming a member of Second City Theatre and getting his start in television as a host on youth network YTV. From there, Majumder rose to national fame on CBC's long-running, satiric sketch series, This Hour Has 22 Minutes and as host of Montreal's Just For Laughs Comedy Festival. Working between Canada and the U.S., Majumder has enjoyed a successful career both in television and film with roles on The Firm, Detroit 1-8-7, 24, The Republic Of Doyle, Less Than Kind and Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle.
