The Community Radio Fund of Canada (CRFC) is happy to announce the recipients of the most recent round of its Youth on Air! program. Over $200,000 was awarded to 21 campus and community radio stations that will hire interns this summer in order to offer them a unique and rewarding radio experience.
“After the program’s success last year, we really wanted to bring back Youth on Air! It’s incredible to see everything that the stations can accomplish with the extra resource, especially during the summer! It also allows the young interns to gain valuable experience. It’s a win-win situation,” says Roger Ouellette, president of the CRFC.
This summer, interns will be hired at radio stations from one coast of the country to the other. They will have the opportunity to go in the field, meet members of their community, and attend special events, shows or festivals. They will also produce documentaries, local newscasts or specialized shows all while gaining hands-on broadcasting skills.
“Kootenay Co-op Radio’s studio is located in Nelson, a small city of 10,000 people in a relatively remote rural area of the B.C. interior. We broadcast to a number of smaller communities nearby. There are no broadcasting or journalism schools in the area, therefore there are no local opportunities for young people who want to build careers in radio or print journalism to get comprehensive training. Our radio station offers community members basic training in radio and journalism, and an opportunity to learn skills in a safe and supportive environment, but we do not have the resources to provide specialized training in news and public affairs production to our volunteers. This grant will allow us to provide two local young people interested in radio or journalism with a more comprehensive skill set,” explains Catherine Fisher, Chair of the Board at CJLY 93.5 FM, 96.5 FM, 107.5 FM in Nelson, B.C.
The funding for Radiometres is provided by Canada’s private radio broadcasters through a portion of their Canadian Content Development (CCD) contributions, a funding mechanism established by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). These contributions play an important part in strengthening the campus and community sector of the Canadian broadcasting system.
Since its founding in 2024, the Community Radio Fund of Canada has awarded more than $10 million to 127 different campus and community radio stations for a total of 454 projects.
