  • 97.7 HTZ-FM, St. Catherines, is partnering with the Canadian Cancer Society to celebrate one of Canada’s most iconic bands, The Tragically Hip, to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. On Friday, July 1 beginning at 9 a.m., 97.7 HTZ-FM rebrands as 97.7 HIP-FM for the day in celebration of The Hippest Canada Day Ever, broadcasting an all-day slate of songs from The Tragically Hip’s 13 studio album discography, along with a selection of live recordings and interview clips.

97.7 HTZ-FM listeners are encouraged to donate simply by texting the word FIGHT to 20242. The text-to-give campaign provides options of $10, $20, or $25 donation amounts.

“We really want to do something special on Canada’s birthday as a tribute to one of our country’s greatest musical treasures,” said Jeff Winskell, Program Director, 97.7 HTZ-FM. “There’s no better time to showcase The Tragically Hip’s catalogue in its entirety, and to raise awareness about the need for cancer research.”

“All of us at the Canadian Cancer Society were sad to hear about Gord Downie’s diagnosis of glioblastoma,” says Paulanne Jushkevich, Chief Philanthropy Officer, Canadian Cancer Society. “Brain cancer is one of the most difficult cancers to treat. Glioblastoma is the prevalent form of brain cancer and, unfortunately, it is incurable. More research is desperately needed to save more lives.”
