Sony of Canada Ltd., Canada's leading supplier of electronic and computer products for consumers and business, today
announced it is enhancing its HDW-S280 half-rack videotape recorder (VTR) with the addition of 24P playback and recording capability.

The upgrade now creates a lower cost of entry into HDCAM(R) 24P production, in response to the growing demand for 24P-capable VTRs at every level of the production chain.

"The HDW-S280 VTR is the perfect entry point for professional users to our HDCAM family of products," said Calvin Judges, Marketing Manager, Broadcast VTRs & Production Systems, Content Creation Division,
Broadcast & Communication Solutions Group, Sony of Canada Ltd. "This new upgrade -- at the same suggested list price for the existing model -- makes it the least expensive of Sony's 24P-capable VTRs. This allows a much sought-after
feature to be well within reach of production professionals who may have previously been restricted by budget limitations."

The HDW-S280 VTR is designed for ENG (electronic news gathering), OB van and field production applications, and features 1080/59.94i and 50i, switchable operation. The VTR also offers legacy support and up-conversion for Sony's Betacam(R), Betacam SP(R), Betacam SX(R) formats.

The VTR features a control panel with LCD (liquid crystal display) monitor, search dial for Jog/Shuttle operation, a built-in down-converter for SD (standard-definition) output (from 60i HD (high-definition) content) and assemble and backspace editing capabilities.

The enhanced HDW-S280 VTR is also available for use with the new RM-280 small editing remote controller, which enables assemble and linear editing operations.

As with all Sony broadcast recording formats, the line of
professional HDCAM recorders is complemented by media that is co-engineered and designed to offer optimum system performance. Sony's BCT-HD Series HDCAM digital
high definition videocassettes incorporate Sony's advanced metal tape technology to enable high density HD recording capable of capturing recording wavelengths of 0.49 um (define) and achieving recording times of up to 50 minutes for
the small-size cassette, and 155 minutes for the large-size cassette (both in 24P mode).

The HDW-S280 VTR is available today at a manufacturers' suggested retail price (MSRP) of $50,250.
