  •  RTDNA Canada – The Association of Electronic Journalists – is pleased to announce that Terry Scott will receive the 2024 “Bill Hutton Award of Excellence.”

Formerly known as the “Friend of RTDNA Canada Award” the award was renamed in 2024 to honour the late Bill Hutton, RTDNA Canada’s first president. The award is given to individuals or organizations which have shown a true commitment to RTDNA and the betterment of broadcast journalism in Canada.

“Terry Scott’s impact on the Canadian broadcasting scene over the past thirty-nine years has been significant,” said RTDNA Canada President Ian Koenigsfest.

Terry caught what he calls the “news bug” working on the school newspaper and taking journalism classes during high school in Saskatoon in the early seventies. He worked as a weekend news anchor at CKOM Saskatoon before graduating from high school and immediately landed a full time job at the station. At only 18 years of age, the young Terry Scott had moved on to CKCK Radio in Regina and also produced and sometimes broadcast the Noon News on CKCK Television. He finished off the 70s with stints at CKGM Montreal and CFTR Toronto, and then jumped to “The Big 8” CKLW Windsor-Detroit in 1980. Terry then moved to CKSL/CIQM-FM London for a few years until joining Broadcast News/The Canadian Press in 1990 as a Supervising Editor. In the following years, he served as General Executive – Client Liaison, News Director and Director of Broadcasting before he left The Canadian Press late last year.

Terry’s active participation in RTDNA Canada includes numerous official roles: Awards Chair, President and Past President; he currently serves on the boards of both RTDNA Canada and RTDNA International. His dedication also extends to keeping our membership informed each week, volunteering countless hours editing our weekly newsletter, the Update.

The “Bill Hutton Award of Excellence” will be presented at the association’s national conference June 5-7, 2024 in Toronto.

Previous recipients of the award include the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council, The Canadian Press, CNN Newsource Sales, CNW Group, WIC, VOCM Radio, Golden West Radio, Broadcast Dialogue magazine, CTV, Taylor Enterprises, media lawyer Dan Burnett, RTDNA International and all former Past Presidents’ of RTDNA Canada.
