TORONTO - Telesat announced last week has installed a new digital uplink system for CTV Inc. as part of a six-year contract that will provide the broadcaster with greater flexibility to distribute television programming across Canada.
The agreement includes a full-period C-band channel as well as a Tandberg digital video compression system, which will permit CTV to create eight standard-definition television channels.
CTV will use these channels to distribute programming from Telesat's Toronto teleport to 24 CTV-owned and affiliate stations across Canada.
The new channels will allow CTV to more easily handle last-minute changes to its television programming schedules than in the past. CTV will devote four channels to distributing national programming, three to replacing terrestrial fibre routes and one to accommodating special requirements.
