TORONTO and CALGARY - Craig Media Inc. last week announced that 37 positions at its Calgary and Toronto television stations have been eliminated.

The layoffs were done as a way for the company to cut its costs as it waits for final approval of the company's purchase by CHUM Ltd.

"This latest move follows work force reductions at the company's Edmonton station as a result of consolidating certain job functions in Alberta within Craig's Calgary and Edmonton A-Channel stations," says the press release.

Caught in the cuts were two nascent Toronto 1 programs, its 11 p.m. chat show Last Call and its morning news program, Toronto Today.

"This is part of an ongoing review and restructuring of our operations to ensure the stations remain competitive and continue to be in a position to meet all of their local programming commitments," said Craig Media Inc. president and CEO Drew Craig.

The announcement affected employees in the areas of program production, sales and marketing.

Craig and CHUM Limited announced the signing of a definitive agreement earlier this year whereby CHUM Limited has agreed to purchase all of the shares of Craig Media Inc. The transaction is subject to CRTC and other customary approvals.
