TORONTO - On September 1st, 1969, Telesat Canada was officially "launched" by an Act of Parliament.

Just three years later, Parliament's wisdom was confirmed when the young company made history with the launch of the Anik A1 satellite -- making Canada the first country with a commercial communications satellite in geostationary orbit.

After 35 years and 15 successful satellite launches, much has changed. In 1969, Telesat's challenge was to bring basic telephone and television service to Canada. Today, it's about using cutting-edge satellite technology to deliver broadband communications to Canadians - anywhere and anytime.

This fall, Telesat enters the history books once again with the launch of commercial service on its latest satellite, Anik F2. The new satellite will be the first in the world to make full commercial use of the breakthrough Ka-band technology, which is ideal for delivering high-speed Internet and other multimedia applications.
