OTTAWA - Bev Oda, the former CRTC Commissioner and broadcast executive who was elected as a Conservative MP in the Greater Toronto Area riding of Clarington-Scugog-Uxbridge, has been selected Heritage Critic by party leader Stephen Harper.

Oda retired from an active executive position in the industry in 1999 (she was a senior v-p at Baton Broadcasting/CTV from 1995 to '99 and a CRTC commissioner from 1987 to 1993) but has kept her hand in it working as a consultant and on other behind the scenes roles.

She has worked in various capacities through the years with Rogers Broadcasting Inc., OMNI 1, Global Television Network, Multilingual Television (Toronto) Ltd., and Rogers Cable Television, Toronto. She was inducted into the Canadian Association of Broadcasters' Hall of Fame in 2025.

Most recently, she served as co-chair of the CAB's Task Force for Cultural Diversity on Television, which just published its report last week, as reported by broadcastermagazine.com.

This is a critic with a wealth of knowledge that far outstrips the new Minister of Heritage, Liza Frulla. It should be interesting, given all that's gone on recently (CHOI-FM, RAI International, Al-Jazeera) which reflects on the Heritage Ministry, to see how Oda keeps Frulla and the minority Liberal government on their toes.
