MTV’s moon man takes centre stage on Sunday’s live broadcast of the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. Marking its 30th anniversary this year, the VMAs air live from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, Sunday, Aug. 25, simulcast for the first time ever on both MTV and Much. Viewers can get a head start to the night with the official MTV Video Music Awards Pre-Show. On home turf, MTV offers fans a Canadian perspective on all-things VMAs as hosts Aliya-Jasmine Sovani and Scott Willats deliver the dish to viewers, with live hits throughout the red carpet and show, from MTV’s HQ in downtown Toronto.
The VMAs are filled with the hottest performances from the biggest stars on the planet. Pop superstar Lady Gaga opens the show with the world premiere performance of her new single “Applause”. Canada’s very own Drake performs his hit single “Started From The Bottom” for the first time on television, while Macklemore & Ryan Lewis perform their smash hit “Same Love”. In addition, chart-topper, Bruno Mars returns to perform at the VMAs for the third time and Katy Perry performs her latest single “Roar”, live from an undisclosed location in Brooklyn. Other performers include Kanye West, Robin Thicke, Miley Cyrus, and Justin Timberlake.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Justin Timberlake go head-to-head with six VMA nominations each this year, followed by smooth singer Bruno Mars with four nominations. Canadians are making their mark this year with scream-inducing nominees including Robin Thicke (three nominations), Toronto-born mega-star Drake (one nomination), R&B singer The Weekend, nominated in the much-coveted “Artist to Watch” category and Best Visual Effects, and Director X, nominated in the Best Direction category. Funny man and late night host, Jimmy Fallon stops by to present the prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award to performer, Justin Timberlake, in honour of his artistry and innovation. Brit sensations One Direction will also be on hand to help award the newly designed silver moon man.
From outside of the Barclays Center, fans can get prepped with the hour-long 2024 MTV Pre-Show, featuring performances by Austin Mahone and Ariana Grande. Australian DJ/producer duo NERVO spins throughout the pre-show broadcast, while Canadian musician and style icon Grimes and fashion designer Rachel Antonoff take on co-hosting duties, dishing on all the red carpet fashion.
During the broadcast, viewers can login with their MTV Core account and answer a trivia question for a chance to win $10,000.
