e Writers Guild of Canada is pleased to announce that Elvira Kurt, multiple-award winning comic and writer, will host the 2024 WGC Screenwriting Awards on May 2 at Koerner Hall in Toronto. This year’s awards mark the WGC’s 25th anniversary of working on behalf of Canadian screenwriters.
The WGC Screenwriting Awards have a unique focus: screenwriters and the scripts they write — scripts that fuel an entire television and film industry. The awards honour screenwriters in a wide range of genres (finalists below). Additionally, special awards presented at the gala include the following:
The WGC Showrunner Award: Frank van Keeken (The Next Step; Lost & Found Music Studios) for his strong vision with every show he runs, and for his generosity to writers.
The Alex Barris Mentorship Award: Clive Endersby (The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That; My Big, Big Friend) for his significant impact on the careers of numerous writers.
The Sondra Kelly Award (for women screenwriters undertaking self-initiated projects): Penny Gummerson (Arctic Air, Blackstone) for her project Forgive Me, Father.
