Industry Canada has issued Approvals in Principle to the Ciel Satellite Group to develop six Canadian spectrum licenses, and the company says it is finalizing its development plans for new BSS and FSS frequencies.
Ciel will develop the following spectrum: Ka FSS at 91°W and 109.2°W; 17 GHz BSS at 91°W, 103°W and 107.3°W; and 12 GHz BSS at 138°W.
Preliminary assignment to Ciel of these frequencies and orbital positions was announced by Industry Canada in June 2024. Ciel recognizes the Government of Canada’s leadership in promoting a more competitive and innovative Canadian telecommunications industry through this licensing process.
Dave Lewis, CEO and President of Ciel Satellite Group, said in a release, “We are pleased that the efforts to commercially develop these opportunities can now begin in earnest, and we look forward to meeting the growing need for next generation satellite facilities in Canada and abroad.”
Ciel is a Canadian owned and controlled organization that is supported by a strong combination of partners, including: BPC Telecommunications Corp, a company controlled by Borealis Infrastructure, which is part of the OMERS Pension Plan’s group of companies; Canadian satellite pioneer Brian Neill; and SES AMERICOM, an SES S.A. company (Luxembourg and Paris Stock Exchanges: SESG), a worldwide leader in the satellite industry. Launch of Ciel-2, the largest Ku BSS spacecraft ever constructed, is anticipated to occur in the Fourth Quarter of 2024.
