Telelatino Network Inc., home of TLN Television and the Spanish-language Univision Canada channel, has teamed up with TD Bank Group as the title sponsor of its Welcome to Canada Literacy Program.
The TD Welcome to Canada literacy program will distribute 1,300 books to selected schools, community centers, and libraries across the country making them available to young newcomers, particularly those of Hispanic descent. The books will help foster an understanding of Canada, including language, geography, history and multiculturalism.
The program reflects Telelatino’s commitment to sharing and showcasing the vibrant Latino culture and to connecting Spanish-speaking Canadians with the passions that make their culture unique – from food to music, drama to sport.
Hispanic Canadians represent the country’s fastest growing foreign language community.* This innovative program allows TD to expand its ongoing commitment to children’s literacy to young Latinos and their families providing additional literacy support to help newcomers better integrate into Canadian society, develop English language skills and learn about the country’s rich history and culture.
“As leaders in the Hispanic Canadian community for over 30 years, Telelatino Network is proud to partner with TD. Together, we are welcoming and supporting the nearly two million Spanish-speaking Canadians in our communities from coast to coast” states Telelatino Network President, Aldo DiFelice.
“We are thrilled to be collaborating with Telelatino Network to launch the TD Welcome to Canada literacy program,” said Alan Convery, Director Community Relations, TD Bank Group. “It is our hope that this program directed specifically to young Latinos and their families will help make them feel more welcome in their new country and, along with their parents, show them what makes Canada great.”
As part of the Hispanic targeted grassroots campaign, the TD Welcome to Canada Reading Tent will be featured at a series of events throughout the summer, including the annual Salsa at Blue Mountain Festival (June 18) and Canada’s largest celebration of Latino Culture, TD Salsa in Toronto Festival featuring Salsa on St. Clair (July 9 & 10). The campaign will also be integrated into TD’s Summer Reading Club program, with book donations being made to a series of libraries in areas with high Hispanic populations. In addition, as part of the TD Grade One Book Giveaway program, this fall, books will be distributed at select schools with a high concentration of Hispanic children.
The community grassroots initiative will be supported by a national TV campaign on TLN Television and Univision Canada (in Spanish and English) to build children’s literacy awareness amongst parents of new Canadians. Highlights from various events will be showcased in community vignettes as part of the on-air and online campaign to support the TD Welcome to Canada campaign.
